Labor Department Reports Increase in Jobless Claims

Omicron variant makes only slight impact

The Labor Department published its final job report for 2021 on Thursday. Adjusting the data for temporary holiday jobs, unemployment applications rose by 2.5% between the last week of December and the week before. Unemployment claims remain around 200,000 per week, despite the surge of the Omicron variant.

Labor Secretary Marty Walsh celebrated the recent unemployment numbers, stating, “The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the American economy added 199,000 jobs in the month of December, and the unemployment rate was 3.9 percent, down from 4.2 percent in November. This marks the first time unemployment has been under four percent since the pandemic began, and the largest ever one-year drop in the unemployment rate on record.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Walsh to seek God’s direction as he heads the Labor Department.
  • For officials within the Bureau of Labor Statistics to accurately evaluate and publish data.
  • That the president and his administration would seek God’s wisdom as they address the job market.
